A Brief History
Richmond Country Club's roots go back to 1949, when two men, Jim Reynolds and "Skinny" Harmon, began building a golf course where River Road meets Patterson Avenue. This project was called the Monacan Hills Country Club. Monacan Hills was officially opened July of 1950 and boasted a nine hole golf course, which is today's back nine. In 1956, a "second" nine was opened. The new nine became the "front" and the original nine the "back".
Also, in 1956, a young man named Leo Steinbrecher, was hired as the club's first PGA Golf Professional. Leo held that job for 39 years, retiring in March of 1995 to become Pro Emeritus for R.C.C.
In the latter "50's", Monacan Hills was reorganized, under the leadership of Thurman Cash, and on May 19, 1960 the Richmond Country Club was born. At that time, the initiation fee was $200.00 and monthly dues were $14.69 a month.
In 1985 a successful campaign was launched to raise funds to install a T-to-green sprinkler system. The system was installed in '86 and marked an important turn around in the club's fortunes. But, even with this major improvement, it was obvious to the then club leadership that the clubhouse needed improvement to attract members.
After much study and debate, a major clubhouse renovation project was launched in '91 and completed in July of '92. It was during this era that several improvements were also made to the golf course and swimming pool.
With the growing membership and the increase in "outside" banquet business, it became clear that the club needed to expand its' facilities. Thus, in late '97, a further expansion program was initiated to enlarge the kitchen facilities, create the dining Veranda and Manakin Lounge, as well as to add some meeting space. In concert with the clubhouse improvements, new tennis courts and major improvements to the front nine of the golf course were also planned. The Veranda and Manakin Lounge opened for business in August of '98, while the renovated front nine opened for play in May of '99.
Since that time, the club has been solidifying its gains by continuing to attract new members on which to build for the future. In November 2006, the club started on its' 3rd phase of expansion. The upstairs was completely remodeled in the 1st. quarter of 2007 and a new state of the art aquatic center is being built and will be open July 2007.
Richmond Country Club is widely known for being a friendly, family oriented, full service country club offering fine dining and excellent recreational facilities-golf, tennis and swimming. And it has proven to be a wonderful place for lasting friendships. The best is yet to come.
